# 22. Teach One Faith to the Whole Church

Catechesis is not a short class that moves people into volunteering. It is the Church teaching people to inhabit the apostolic faith: to know the Triune God, read Scripture, pray, worship, renounce false paths, confess Christ, receive baptism and the Table, resist sin, love neighbors, endure suffering, discern claims, serve in the body, and hope for resurrection.

The Greek katecheo means to instruct orally or sound down. Luke writes so that Theophilus may know the certainty of what he has been taught. Paul expects taught people to share material goods with teachers and directs the Church to transmit the entrusted deposit. The Didache, Irenaeus' Demonstration, and later Cyril's catechetical lectures show doctrine, moral formation, baptism, prayer, and worship belonging together.

## One Spine, Several Entrances

Create one theological spine with different paths for:

- people first exploring Christianity;
- candidates for baptism or reception;
- children and youth growing inside the Church;
- adults who have attended for years without a coherent doctrinal map;
- people transferring from another Christian tradition;
- leaders and teachers who need deeper source and role formation; and
- people returning after absence, deconstruction, discipline, or harm.

The paths should meet in the same reality, not create a basic faith for ordinary people and a hidden complex faith for leaders. Depth changes; the gospel does not.

## The Catechetical Arc

Teach at least:

- God, creation, the Axiom of Purpose, image, creaturely goodness, and human reception;
- Scripture, Israel, covenant, Torah, prophets, wisdom, and the canonical story;
- Trinity, incarnation, the life and teaching of Jesus, cross, resurrection, ascension, reign, Spirit, and return;
- sin as privation and active misalignment, idolatry, the powers, personal and systemic corruption, judgment, grace, repentance, faith, and participation in Christ;
- the Church, baptism, Eucharist, prayer, worship, gifts, office, holiness, discipline, communion, protection, and mission;
- body, sex, marriage, singleness, household, work, money, technology, suffering, healing, death, and care within the DDF coverage already established;
- truth, claim kinds, conscience, disagreement, science, history, spiritual experience, and how to revise a mistaken judgment; and
- final judgment, resurrection, new creation, and Christian hope.

This is not a demand that every course become DDF in technical language. The Faith That Holds supplies a reader-level catechetical form. DDF remains the source architecture for teachers. The local church adds its confession, sacramental and polity practice, language, stories, and pastoral applications.

## Formation beyond Content

Every unit should include Scripture, explanation, prayer, a practice, a question that can be asked safely, and one relation to gathered worship. Teach for memory without reducing mystery to slogans. Use creeds, short answers, songs, gestures, art, meals, service, testimony, and repeated prayer as forms governed by truth.

Assessment should ask more than recall. Can the person locate a claim in the canonical story? Can they distinguish doctrine from a prudential opinion? Can they confess error, ask for help, recognize danger, pray a Psalm, explain the gospel, receive a neighbor, and participate in worship? Fruit does not replace truth; it reveals whether teaching has reached life.

## Hard Questions and Disagreement

Maintain a question path outside the public class. Teachers should be able to say, "I do not know," "our church has not settled that," "Christians disagree here," and "our church has made this governing judgment for these reasons." Do not reward performative doubt or punish honest inquiry. Do not let one difficult participant control the whole room.

Questions involving abuse, self-harm, crime, medical danger, sexuality, marriage breakdown, immigration, or protected personal information may need a different care or safety path. A catechism group is not a public intake system.

When sexuality enters teaching or care, separate body, involuntary attraction, chosen identity language, conduct, distress, diagnosis, proposed intervention, and Church status. A moral judgment does not authorize a psychiatric diagnosis. Do not promise orientation change, force disclosure, prescribe marriage as treatment, or make belonging depend on performing a promised outcome. If the church teaches chastity, its operating plan must also provide durable friendship, spiritual kinship, ordinary hospitality, and meaningful belonging for people who may never marry.
