Resurrection is not the survival of a pattern, influence or memory. It is life returned to the one who died. Resemblance and comfort for mourners cannot satisfy it. Nor can an account of identity establish that resurrection occurs merely by making its promise intelligible. The warrant concerns God's action in Christ; the metaphysical question concerns what that action must preserve.
Daniel's dead awake to differentiated outcomes; its “many” should not silently become “all.” John 5 supplies the wider assertion that all in the tombs hear the Son's voice, distinguishing present passage into life from future raising, and raising to life from raising to judgment. Universal resurrection is consequently wider than glorification.
Changed embodiment
Jesus' promise at Lazarus's grave acknowledges dying while denying death final authority over life in Him. Lazarus's return to mortal life is not yet the completed incorruption of Christ. Paul's firstfruits argument makes Christ's resurrection the beginning of the promised harvest, rather than the claim that believers have already ceased dying. If the dead merely continue influencing survivors, his insistence that they otherwise perished remains unanswered.
Paul's seed analogy combines continuity and difference under God's giving; it supplies no extrapolatable biological mechanism. Soma psychikon and soma pneumatikon both name bodies. Their contrast concerns present animate, perishable life and embodied life transformed in the Spirit. “Spiritual” cannot simply mean nonbodily, nor “natural” intrinsically sinful matter. The dust-derived creature can be good without possessing completion. Flesh and blood's inability to inherit is paired with corruption's inability to inherit incorruption: the condition must change, not the subject become a replacement.
Transformation does not require prior death. Verse 51's preferred critical text distinguishes those who do not sleep from the change of all. Ancient variants alter its negations, including all sleeping but not all changing and all rising but not all changing. Verse 52 and 1 Thessalonians independently distinguish raised dead from living people changed and gathered with them; 2 Corinthians desires further clothing rather than mere bodily removal. Death is an interruption requiring resurrection, not the mechanism necessary for glorification.
Any genuine persons in a hypothetical pre-Adamic history would likewise receive completion through Christ. That is a conditional inference, not a narrated population. Need for transformation, culpable alienation and final destiny must remain distinct; innocence supplies no independent source of incorruption.
The known dead and the transformed
Second Maccabees places bodily hope under Antiochus IV's persecution. A brother offers hands and tongue received from Heaven, expecting their restoration; the mother expects her sons back from the giver of breath. Wealth and office tempt the youngest to renounce fidelity, but he and his mother die. Replacement beneficiaries would leave these losses unanswered. The same chapter interprets national suffering as chastening and denies the king resurrection to life; neither its punitive judgment nor its differentiated outcome can be suppressed.
Post-70 2 Baruch first restores recognizable dead and then differentiates glorious transformation from shame. This later Jewish apocalypse is not Paul's demonstrated source or a report from Jeremiah's lifetime. Recognition makes continuity public without constituting identity. A person can remain the same while recognition fails; resurrection need not freeze the last configuration of dementia.
Apocalypse narrates mediated revelation of history's ultimate horizon and a reality beyond ordinary perception. It permits present power to appear before a wider court. Daniel's beasts, Ancient of Days, humanlike figure and holy people contrast predatory rule with received dominion; the figure's individual/representative relation remains debated. Revelation's Roman-world churches encounter civic worship, commerce and threatened allegiance together. Babylon's cargo includes enslaved bodies and lives, whose anonymity does not remove them from resurrection's scope.
The Lamb orders victory through faithful witness, not appropriation of the beast's methods. Revelation 20 nevertheless has a first resurrection, reign, conflict and final court; interpreting symbolic language does not mean chronology never matters. Neither can every vision be joined into a complete schedule. Hope must resist private decoding, paranoia and revolutionary immunity from judgment while sustaining ordinary work and care.
What must persist
Resurrection has a recipient. Two distinct people with Elias's exact memories cannot both be numerically Elias: if each were him, they would be one another. Informational duplication is insufficient. Fixed particles are likewise unnecessary for ordinary living continuity, but bodily turnover supplies no complete criterion across death. Giving a replica happiness would not establish Elias's receipt; punishing it would not establish his responsibility.
A continuing immaterial subject supplies a dualist's proposed bridge. It must establish that subject and its bodily relation; creating a matching soul merely relocates duplication. Aquinas's substantial form is not a complete person operating a vehicle. He argues for the rational soul's subsistence while denying that the soul alone is the human being; sensation belongs to the composite. Resurrection restores an incomplete human good even where survival is affirmed.
Baker's constitution account makes personal identity primitive and preserves the same first-person perspective, not copied psychological contents. Her boundary concerns permanent, irretrievable loss of the capacity, not ordinary unconsciousness or a dementia diagnosis. DDF nevertheless refuses to make that capacity's retention the condition of the impaired person's standing. Her contrast between person and organism also requires an additional premise that corruptibility belongs essentially to the organism's kind; qualitative transformation alone establishes no replacement.
Animalism locates the subject in the human animal. Merricks's Christian physicalism allows the same organism's radically transformed resurrection and a temporal gap, while acknowledging an unknown means and pressure from presence-with-Christ texts. Someone who denies resumption after complete cessation will not be answered by exact reassembly. The dispute concerns persistence, not engineering fidelity.
Resurrection's bridge is not an engineering recipe. DDF affirms an actual divine act: God preserves this person's identity through death and restores this person's embodiment. Preservation names a relation to the creature, not merely an accurate divine description. Its precise intermediate mode remains open. This is a substantive theological commitment grounded in the promise, not a complete independently demonstrated persistence criterion. Ignorance of means neither warrants the promise nor automatically disproves it; divine power cannot make two distinct subjects one original by declaration.
The whole agent's intended good
The treatise transmitted as Athenagoras's On the Resurrection argues beyond punishment. Human beings exist for their intended good, not to supply God's lack or merely another creature's use. Infants dying before ordinary accountable acts therefore still have a reason to rise. Soul and body act and suffer together; fulfillment cannot permanently discard the bodily bearer.
The treatise also argues perpetual human duration, while Athenagoras's securely attributed Plea forcefully rejects annihilation. That pressure must remain when final destruction is evaluated. Its obsolete account of nutrient assimilation cannot become resurrection's modern physiological warrant. Authorship of the resurrection treatise is disputed: Grant challenged and Pouderon defended attribution; its transmission in Arethas's collection and the Plea's promise of more argument do not settle it.
The interval and Christ's reach
Sleep emphasizes awakening under God's power without importing every feature of sleep physiology. Paul's desire to depart and be with Christ, Hebrews' perfected spirits and Revelation's petitioning slain witnesses exert substantial pressure toward a received intermediate good. They cannot be reduced to divine recollection. In Luke 23, joining “today” to presence in paradise is more natural than emphasizing the evident day of speaking; absent ancient punctuation does not make alternatives equally persuasive.
Irenaeus instead stresses souls waiting in God's appointed invisible place before receiving bodies, against abandoning creation for immediate final ascent. Conscious presence must explain bodily incompleteness; sleep must account for presence texts; cessation adds a disputed gap; immediate fulfillment must explain common future resurrection. An unexperienced wait would not erase elapsed shared history. DDF's preservation claim is more definite than its psychology of this interval.
Acts identifies Jesus as the Holy One not abandoned to Hades. Revelation's living one holds death's keys, later judging death and Hades themselves; descent is not the impenitent's final destiny. Romans 10's impossible journeys concern the nearness of the saving word, not an underworld itinerary. Ephesians' lower regions may concern the earth below heaven or regions beneath it; the giver's descent and ascent establish no audience or outcome of evangelization.
Petrine proclamation remains disputed in audience and timing. Victory over spirits, address to dead humans and preaching through Noah to living hearers are materially different readings; good news to the dead may have preceded their death. Melito's Paschal victory speech witnesses reception, not an added transcript, and cannot carry his collective anti-Jewish accusations into the argument.
Lordship, proclamation, judgment, adequate opportunity and saving acceptance are therefore different claims. The opportunity argument adds its own moral premise; accurate attribution alone does not entail a later encounter. Resurrection strengthens its identity condition: any healed capacity or encounter must reach the person whose access was limited. Neither restored capacity nor an address entails acceptance.
History healed, not exchanged
God's relation to Elias's whole actual life does not by itself prove resurrection; resurrection adds restored life to that bearer. Positive restoration includes bodily integrity, intelligible access and agency capable of response. An insensible harmless remainder would not be restored human wholeness. An exact age, every former skill or omniscient autobiographical access is no condition of numerical identity.
Known injury need not remain perpetual present experience. Harm, dying and healing occupy an ordered history; healing neither deletes the event nor manufactures the unlived alternative. Mara likewise remains a distinct beneficiary whose renewed relation must be truthful. Restoration grants no abusive former arrangement an entitlement to recur.
The same identity binds promise and judgment. A victim who also inflicted harm cannot be divided into convenient substitutes for the two claims. Ending that person's corrupt formation while preserving and healing the subject would be salvation with loss, not annihilation of the same person. Conversely, a text destroying the person cannot be explained merely by renaming its object a habit. The dead who stand before God are the actual subjects whose lives require an answer.
